Success! The Crew of Two Around Catalina race went off without a hitch and with more entries than last year. For results see the “The Finish Line” column in this issue (or the SSYC web site), but I can tell you the race was pretty exciting: The first two boats in PHRF A class dueled it out all night and in the end finished only 5 minutes of corrected time apart. That was nothing, however, compared to PHRF B class where the first two boats’ corrected times were separated by only 33 seconds. The third place boat was just another 12 seconds back – all this on a 90 mile race! In addition, over half the boats finished, and that’s no small achievement in this race. We all owe Co2 Race Chair and Staff Commodore Joe Greenblatt (as well as Pam, Harold, Dave and the rest of the race committee and organizers) a debt of gratitude for doing an immense amount of work. I want to congratulate them on their success. (We also got some good publicity in the process thanks to Bev Day, our PR person.) Finally, I want to thank Marina Sailing (and their manager, Charlie) for loaning us our committee boat. We couldn’t have done it without all your efforts.

Speaking of race committees, committee boat crews continue to have a good time at the Wednesday evening in-the-harbor Hibachi races. This month is your last chance for the year, so if you’re free about 5PM on a Wednesday in Newport Beach, come on out! (Call Don Albrecht or myself to get directions and find out what you can do.)

The SSYC social event of the summer is coming up August 16! It’s our annual summer raft-up featuring The Fabulous Nomads playing on the flying bridge of Jackson Willett’s grand banks, Mandarin, starting at 1PM. Everybody with or without a boat should come out during the day and join in on the party. For those with boats, the raft-up will start forming in the central turning basin in the morning, and some boats will remain until the following day. For those without boats (or with boats in other harbors), the SSYC shore boat will run all day Saturday from the guest dock at the club starting about 12:30. Our friends in Mackerel Flats Yacht Club are going to do this with us so let’s see if we can set a new record for number of boats in a raft-up. Call Scott or Steve or Jackson for information.

Finally, I and the negotiating team expect the work on our new Memorandum of Understanding with our sister club, Newport Beach Yacht Club, to be wrapped up by our second Friday dinner in August. Expect to hear more at the August dinner. In the meantime, I’ll see you on the water.
